The Benefits Of Both Walking and Having A Sunny Corner

Because my love of walking began when I was a child and has continued into my 60’s, I think you can appreciate why, the older I get, the more I wish New England winters were both shorter and warmer. Walking outdoors provides me with so many benefits, including the abilities to…

  • Manage stressful situations (and that comes from getting my heart pumping and seeing the beauty of nature)
  • Fall asleep more quickly and sleep more soundly
  • Stay in the best possible mental and physical health
  • See and chat with neighbors
  • Be in a better mood (from getting a dose of sunshine which we all need to stay upbeat)
  • Take a work break during the day (even it’s not until late afternoon)

On any day of the year, particularly cold winter days, I love walking to a spot in my neighborhood that I refer to as the “sunny corner.” One can stand on the corner where two very quiet, low-traffic streets in my neighborhood intersect and point one’s face at the sun that always seems to beat down hard on that corner. Of course, the sun does not shine there on a rainy day, but on a day when the sun is out, I seek out the sunny corner and pretend I’m Timothy in the “The Odd Life Of Timothy Green.” I raise my face and arms to the sun and soak up all the warmth, energy, and beauty of the sun to feed my body and my soul!

Whether it’s a literal “sunny corner” or a figurative one, I hope all my readers have a sunny corner. A special place, hobby, interest, person, song, poem, book, movie, sports team, sport activity, etc. that rejuvenates them, and provides nurturing and hope. Something, someone or someplace that provides the necessary nutrients to keep their body and spirit functioning optimally!

The view I see when I stand on the sunny corner!
